Why didnā€™t someone think of it sooner? The Outfit ā€“ could be a criminal organisation, could be something youā€™d wear. How about writing a drama that conflates and confuses the two, and make it aboutā€¦ erā€¦ a tailor who somehow gets caught up in the work of a criminal establishment. The conceit is worn transparent in Graham Mooreā€™s debut as a feature director. Like a bespoke suit this is a handsomely assembled item, made from fine materials and put together with care and a conservative eye. Itā€™s a Sondheimian title, Waiting for the Barbarians ā€“ as in, ā€œdonā€™t worry, theyā€™re hereā€ ā€“ a story about the white manā€™s civilising mission on some distant frontier and how it gives licence to people whose instincts are far from civilised. The uniforms are deliberately non-specific but for the sake of argument we might as well say itā€™s the British who are in the spotlight, especially as Brit Mark Rylance is the star. He’s also almost the entire focus of a film about a kindly magistrate way out in the midst of a sandy nowhere whose humanist tendencies are crushed underfoot by the arrival of one badass after another.
