Look at the long list of executive producers attached to The Last Son and you’ve got to wonder if they aren’t at least partly responsible for the film’s uncertainty about what it is. Even the title is in dispute – The Last Son of Isaac LeMay is an alternative. Crown Vic goes by the title Bulletproof in the UK and Protect and Serve in Australia, because barely anyone in those countries has any idea what a Crown Vic is. Maybe not that many in the USA do either. So I’ll tell you. It’s the Ford Crown Victoria cop car, the black and white one that’s been speeding off after bad guys in movies (and on the streets) for at least 20 years, from the start of its production run in 1992. The Vanished stars three names who used to keep casting directors’ phones busy. Anne Heche, Thomas Jane and Jason Patric all bring a useful intensity to an incredibly wayward kidnap drama written by Peter Facinelli, whose face you’ll probably know (from the Twilight films, or Supergirl or Nurse Jackie on TV) even if you don’t quite recognise the name. It’s a simple whodunit, in many ways, loaded up with paranoia, and kicking off in a trailer park that’s largely deserted, on account of it being Thanksgiving weekend, where married couple Wendy (Heche) and Paul (Jane) rock up in their RV with their daughter for a family camping weekend.
